My story - why a Scimitar?
I had been thinking for over 10 years about doing a restoration and scribbled shortlists featuring all the usual suspects (the predictable MG's and a few unusuals... Lotus Elite 501 and so forth) but it dawned on me that I wanted to choose something that meant something to me. Something that I had an attachment too. I'd never even sat in a Lotus Elite and MG's never meant a lot to me...but a Scimitar did!
We had it for about 9 years and I loved going out in it. I'd agree to go anywhere jsut so I could go in it. The bright yellow caught peoples eyes and it was just a bit unusual. The gruff exhaust note helped, as did the unique looks. I still think its a great shape and the rear end does look good, even after over 30 years.
So when I was thinking about what to restore the Scimitar soon appeared on the shortlist. As I was flicking through eBay I came across PUJ850R, a yellow SE6, and I was sold. I'd never seen a yellow one for sale let alone an SE6, as opposed to the later and more common SE6a and 6b. I had to have it! This was the one to restore!
I originally won the bid but then sold it to a chap at work (matrominial reasons!) who has always fancied one. That was until a Land Rover came up for sale and he opted to go for that and sell the Scimitar. Hence he gave me first refusal and so, permissions from wife granted, I became the new owner after Christmas 2014.
And here begins my restoration story.
Here I am with my Dads yellow SE6 that I remember him buying back in 1977. It was in a showroom on a raised platform at a Jaguar and Land Rover main dealer, Guy Salmon, in Thames Ditton. It was previously owned by the MD of Givenchy Perfumes UK and was 18 months old with 7000 miles on the clock. It was for sale for £5995 which was a lot in 1977! I remember sitting in the back as we went for a test drive and thinking this is a cool car! Much cooler than our orange, sorry I meant Vermillion, Morris Marina 1.3 Super we drove home in! Shortly after that test drive the deal was done and a banana yellow Scimitar sat in the drive.
